What a low hold is for

Hold is the share of the money a book keeps when you bet every outcome in proportion. A typical market priced -110 on both sides holds about 4.8%. Shop each side at a different book and the combined hold can fall under 1%.

That matters when a promotion requires you to bet a set amount — a rollover or playthrough. Betting both sides of a low-hold pair turns over the required volume at a cost of a fraction of a percent, instead of the several percent the book would normally keep.

A hold below zero is an arbitrage: every outcome returns more than it cost. The preview on this page is a delayed snapshot; the live list is on the Low Hold board.

How to clear a rollover with it

  1. 1Read the promotion's terms: which markets count, the minimum odds, and whether both sides may be at the same book.
  2. 2Pick the lowest-hold pair that meets the minimum odds.
  3. 3Stake both sides so either result returns the same amount.
  4. 4Repeat until the playthrough is met, and log each pair so you know what the rollover actually cost.

Watch for

  • Promotions that exclude bets on both sides of a market at one book.
  • Minimum-odds rules that rule out the cheapest pairs.
  • Prices moving between your two bets.

Frequently asked questions

What is a low hold bet?

A pair of bets on opposite sides of one market, at different books, whose combined margin is small — typically under 2%. Betting both costs very little whichever side wins.

What is a good hold percentage?

Under 2% is low for a two-way market; under 1% is very low. A standard -110/-110 market holds about 4.8%. Below 0% is an arbitrage.

How do I calculate hold?

Convert each side's odds to an implied probability, add them up, and subtract 100%. TrueEdge's free hold calculator does it for two-way and three-way markets in American or decimal odds.
